2009 April | What Some Would Call Lies

This is the one where we watch a lot of movies.

Daniel and I had a lazy Saturday yesterday.  We locked ourselves in the house and had a movie marathon.

overthehedgeWe had 5 Netflix movies here, and we put them in random order.  The first movie we watched was Over The Hedge. This movie is from the makers of Shrek.  It was cute, but I ended up falling asleep about half way through the movie.

The sad thing about this movie is that there are a bunch of animals that are trapped in a little green patch when a new housing track builds around them while they are hibernating. And their #1 enemy is the H.O.A. president (played by the lovely Allison Janney).  Ironically, the boyfriend just joined the HOA here and he’s a total HOA nazi.  At one point, the HOA president in the movie says:

Gladys: [On phone] The homeowners charter, which you signed, says the grass is supposed to be two inches, and according to my measuring stick, yours is two-point-five.

Kind of close to home.  He’s not that bad…but Daniel is close.

grey-gardens-poster-1The second movie we watched was HBO’s Grey Gardens.  Great movie about a movie.  If you don’t know, HBO made this movie about the cult-classic Maysles brothers documentary. Big Edie and her daughter Little Edie were the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, and they lived together in a mansion called Grey Gardens.

In 1971 their living conditions were exposed in a National Enquirer story and a New York Magazine story.

I first heard about the documentary in the Rufus Wainwright song Grey Gardens.  And since I first saw the documentary, I was so curious about the lives of these women.  And this HBO movie (staring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange) definitely scratched an itch. I’m pretty certain you’ll enjoy this movie more if you’re familiar with the documentary.  I fell asleep about half way through the movie and woke up before the end.

Edith ‘Little Edie’ Bouvier Beale: This is the best thing to wear for today, you understand. Because I don’t like women in skirts and the best thing is to wear pantyhose or some pants under a short skirt, I think. Then you have the pants under the skirt and then you can pull the stockings up over the pants underneath the skirt. And you can always take off the skirt and use it as a cape. So I think this is the best costume for today.

frozen-riverMovie number 3 was Frozen River.  Erin suggested this movie, and Dan Netflixed it (can I use netflix as a verb??).  Set on some Canadian border town near an Indian Rezs., it’s the story of two working class women and how they start earning cash by smuggling people across the border.

I fell asleep right as the movie started, but woke up in time to get the gist of the story.  It was sad and suspenseful.   The lead actress Melissa Leo was nominated for an Oscar for this role.

After this movie, Daniel went and picked up our unhealthy dinner at KFC, and I did dishes and fed and pooped the puppy.  Once dinner was ready, we popped in movie number 4.

6a00e398d794760003011016351a25860c-500piThe fourth movie in our movie marathon was Doubt.  I can’t tell you too much about this movie because soon after I finished eating I fell asleep.

I guess I had a long week.  Or I can’t help falling asleep in movies.  Or that Nyquil was working.

Whatever.

So by the time Doubt was finished, I was ready to go to bed.  But I wanted to eat strawberries, so I pretended that I was going to stay up for another movie and told Dan to put on movie number five.

adventures_in_babysittingThe fifth movie, which I was surprised Daniel had never seen was The Adventures of Babysitting.  Shocking, right?  Well I only lasted about fifteen minutes.  Then I went to bed.

All in all, it was a pretty enjoyable movie marathon night…from what I remember of it anyway.

This is the one where my face burns.

I’ve lived in Arizona for over a year, but I’ve just recently started wearing contact lenses. That means that I have also started wearing sunglasses.

And a really good lesson that I learned the hard way is this: don’t leave your sunglasses in the car.

I’m serious. I’m talking 3rd degree burns on your face. I’ve started taking my glasses inside with me everywhere because it gets so hot in the car.

So if you’re ever visiting this hot state, consider yourself warned.

This is the one from the pride festival.

I went to Phoenix’s Gay Pride festival this afternoon, and snapped a few photos:

First we parked at the Park-And-Ride and took the light rail downtown.

The annual Pat Tillman run was this morning, and there were sleeping marathoners on the train. Cute.

We found a spot on the parade route. It was warm and sunny out. Really a beautiful day.

This is the one where I went to school with her.

So strange.

0657682800Have any of you heard about the lady that some people are calling “The Sunday School Killer”?  This lady allegedly kidnapped, raped, killed, and then stuffed an 8-year-old into a suitcase and dropped her into a pond.

The creepy part is that I totally went to High School with her.

In High School her name was Melissa Lawless, but after a marriage she is going by Melissa Huckaby.  When I first saw her picture on the news I thought, “Oh, she looks like Melissa Lawless…but it can’t be her because she has a different last name and she is living in Northern California.”

Then I was watching Good Morning America and I saw an interview with her dad.  And his last name was Lawless.  Holy crap, right?

I wasn’t B.F.Fs with her or anything…but we definetly shared a few friends.  And since her last name is so close to my last name, we often sat next to one another in classes where the teachers alphabitized us.  And at graduation.

You can read more about Melissa’s story here.

This is the one where I complain.

I’m not usually a complainer…but from time to time you get such cruddy coustomer service that you have to write a letter of complaint.  I did so a few weeks ago after receiving NO service from a Lens Crafters.  I got an email today that said:

“Thank you for contacting LensCrafters.

We are sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction with the service by our Chandler Fashion Center location. The management team has been advised of your concerns and should contact you within 24-48 hours. If you are not contacted within the time frame provided, feel free to contact the store at your convenience. The phone number of the LensCrafters located at Chandler Fashion Center is 480-726-9001.

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you. “

What, if anything would you predict will come from this?

This is the one with my 12 of 12 for April.

header

On the 12th day of each month a bunch of bloggers take 12 photos of their day. Here are mine for April, 2009.

If you’d like to see the collection of everyone’s photos, go to Chad’s page.

1

She was waiting for me when I woke up.

2

Early on Easter morning.  I jump in the car and head way out to my parent’s house.  They live in the middle of no where.

3

I got there at about 10:30 a.m.

4

Those malt ball Easter candies are so tempting!

5

My 15-year-old nephew is in that too-cool-for-school phase right now.  He spent most of the day on my parent’s computer.

6

He was on the computer, so I used my phone to tweet.

7

I haven’t worn this sweatshirt in a while…primarily because I’m no longer an herbivore.

8

Big sis cooking.

9

We all wanted to play Rumikub, but it’s been so long since we played that we started arguing over the rules.

10

I won 2 out of the 3 games we played.

11

Came home and edited the 12th episode of the Sweet Talk podcast.

12

Made dinner for me and Daniel.  Seriously, it tasted better than it looked.

This is the one with a reminder.

Remember that tomorrow is the 12th of the month, so you should do 12 of 12 with me and a ton of other people.

The instructions are easy:

  1. Wake up
  2. Turn on your camera
  3. Snap 12 photos throughout the day
  4. Blog those photos
  5. Go to Chad’s webpage
  6. Add a link to your blog post with the 12 pictures
  7. Make new friends

Seriously, on the 12th, 13th and 14th of the month I see a wave of traffic sent to me from Chad’s site.  And I get a bunch of comments and emails from really friendly people that have done their own 12 of 12s.

Don’t miss out.

This is the one written after game night.

Last night we had a little game night…just me and Daniel and 2 other couples.

We kept it small because it was Olive’s first time having a group of people here at the house.  We didn’t want her to totally freak out.  And she only freaked at first when our guests arrived.

1651023bc2b8_a400All-in-all it was a pretty fun evening.  We started by playing a really fun game called Cranium Party Playoff, which requires players to debate and argue…which helped us get to know Sylvia’s boyfriend Michael.

The gist of Party Playoff is that you have a bunch of random People, Places, Things and Actions put into brackets, and you pick a Challenge Card that says something like “Which would you rather have as a limo driver?” and as a group you have to decide if you’d rather have George Clooney or Liberace as your limo driver.  Majority rules.

Our final score on this game was: Daniel-12 points; Michael (not me)-7 points; Adam-7 points; Nick-4 points; Sylvia- 1 point; Me-0 points.

Zero freaking points…WTF?!?

I did much better at Catch Phrase. My team won two out of three games.  Sylvia were really on the same page for this game.  At one point my word was “revenge,” and all I had to say was, “I’m going to get…” and she shouted out the right word!

Next game night is going to be a bit bigger, because Olive did really well.
