Giving should be selfless. And I’m well aware that this Benevolent Blogger project could be construed as self-promoting, and therefore could cancel out my own good karma. I get it. I’m banking, however, on the idea that this project will catch on and encourage a few other folks to start giving (time or money) and it will all even out in the eyes of the deciders.
What The Heck Is This?
This is all about giving. Ever since I’ve been old enough to make money, I’ve also been giving it away. Sometimes I give more than others. And sometimes I don’t give at all. But with the Benevolent Blogger project, I’m kind of making my giving a bit more routine.
With my last two paychecks I have given 2.5% away. And it was fun. I actually decided that I could afford X dollars per-paycheck, and that rounded nicely to 2.5 percent. As my income fluctuates (hopefully for the better), I’m going to stick with that percentage.
And I’ve enjoyed the hell out of it. Seriously.
Each payday I “shop” the internet for a cause that is worthy of my money. Towards the bottom of this page I have listed the few organizations that I have given to. You’ll see that their missions are pretty varied. Some of them hit close to home (like the gay-rights organizations and the diabetic research organizations), and others hit close to home for friends of mine (like the Cancer research and AIDS organizations).

Doesn’t it sound fun?
It’s pretty easy to become a Benevolent Blogger. You don’t have to give 2.5% like me. You don’t even have to give money. Just create an agreement with yourself, and stick to it. Are you going to donate one hour a week? Are you going to give $20 to the ACLU every month? Just make it consistent.

Other Benevolent Bloggers
It’s easy to get your name on this list. Just blog about your commitment and then shoot me an email. I will add your name to this list.
And don’t forget to keep an updated list of where you are donating your time and money. Then all of the other benevolent bloggers can click around and find other worthy charities.
