This is the one about ‘A Prayer For Owen Meany.’

I just finished John Irving’s A Prayer For Owen Meany.
The story is about Johny Wheelwright and his best friend Owen Meany growing up together in a small New England town during the 50s and 60s.
Owen Meany is a small boy…kind of dwarf-like in size, and he believes that he’s God’s instrument.
The book was adapted to film called Simon Birch, but it was very loosely based on the novel. The movie omitted most of the last half of the book and changed the ending. They named the movie Simon Birch instead of the same title as the novel at Irving’s request.
A Prayer… definitely gets added to my top 20 favorite books. If you like Irving’s other novels, you’ll appreciate this one. There are a lot of intricate details that all get put together in the end. Very rewarding.
Additionally, the characters–especially Owen–will be stuck with you in the same way you remember Holden Caufield, Captain John Yossarian, and Atticus Finch.

I stumbled on this book my first year of college…and I loved it. My copy is well worn, and has been passed around to many of my friends. I’m so glad you got a chance to read and love it just the same.

This is for real one of my favorite books of all time. I also loved The Cider House Rules, Widow for One Year, and The World According to Garp, but Owen Meany is my favorite. I also read Setting Free the Bears, which I did like, but as Irving’s first novel, you can tell that he has gotten better with experience.

oof. I’m trying to finish this book right now. I think that with everything going on in my life I just find it hard to get into the frame of mind to finish it. I have loved what I’ve read so far… I just… I don’t know. I hope I get to finish it soon though because I’ve promised myself not to start a new one until I finish this one. Gah.
