It has been a somewhat hectic week and it’s been nearly impossible to keep my energy levels up this week. I was very happy, however, to find Portlandia on Netflix this week.

Portlandia is a sketch comedy show with Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein set in Portland.

If you get IFC or if you have Netflix streaming, I suggest you check it out. Some of my favorites are the “Put A Bird On It” people and the “Did you read…” sketch (YouTube vid below).

FRIDAY, JANUARY 6th, 2012… I <3 Portlandia.

I’ve read some hate on the Twitter & Facebook about Glee and the loss of plot in the past ten(ish) episodes. And although this might not sound like I’m defending it, hear me out…The writing on Glee has never been good. And frankly, looking for a solid story and a captivating plot in an episode of Glee is like trying to find a tube of lipstick in a female softball player’s purse. You’re the fool if you’re looking.

Take one step back, idiots. It’s a show where the actors break out into song and dance. Since episode two, FOX has provided sneak peaks of the SONGS, not the stories. There are multiple storylines about homosexuals.

This show is about musical theatre (with the gay “e” at the end) not about the play upon its stage.

Maybe Season One fooled you into thinking that this show would somehow fill the I-Got-Picked-On-As-A-Teen-And-I’ve-Got-The-Issues-To-Prove-It-sized hole in your high school experience, but clearly the road to regionals didn’t satisfy you. Why don’t you just leave me my Glee…and go shit talk about the lack of story in Grey’s Anatomy or some other serious show that has actually promised you good writing and failed to deliver.

While watching Glee last night I almost peed myself when Rachel Berry (played by Lea Michele) started singing my all-time favorite showtune. It’s “What I Did For Love” from the show A Chorus Line.

I was at Drew’s place, and we were on the couch…his head on my chest. And when Rachel sang the first words “Kiss today goodbye” I gasped and said “Oh god!” Drew jumped up and thought I had seen an intruder or something.

And since I’m so in love with the song, I of course, have a few points of criticism about the Glee version. Here’s the video from Glee.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ6VQJqHKO0

My main point of criticism is that the Glee adaptation removed one of the most moving parts of the song – when the entire chorus line backs Diana up with the chorus. Here is the version that most people are familiar with from the 2006 revival cast recording (the part I’m talking about is just past 2:40).

www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc5dO3bz4ws

Anyway, I totally musical nerded-out yesterday during Glee (a somewhat common experience; does anyone remember the “Defying Gravity” episode…hello?), and I’m so glad the fall TV season is back.

I’ve mentioned this before: I have a huge love of sitcom theme songs. It’s sad that TV airtime is too valuable to waste on a good lengthy theme song. Instead we get stuff like this from Courtney Cox’s new show Cougar Town:

What the hell?

Here’s another ABC show. Their intro is slightly longer but still ridiculously short. It’s from Modern Family.

This is what a theme song should look like. In my opinion, one of the best on TV right now. From The Office:

On the same note, probably written by same of the same folks (don’t quote me on that) is Parks and Recreation:

Whatever happened to the story being part of the intro? Remember this:

What’s your favorite theme song right now? Or do you just not care about them??
