This is the one where I donate life.

I’ve been living here in Arizona for a few months now, but it’s taken me a while to get off my butt and finish the little bit of paperwork to become part of the organ donor registry.

Are you an organ donor?  Why not?

Don’t give me that old urban legend about paramedics being less likely to save your ass because they see you are a donor.  Why would a paramedic decide that your life is less valuable than someone that needs a transplant?

So now its official.

Death is sad.  I’m hoping that something positive will come from mine.

hey mike,i really appreciate this post!  as a cadaver kidney recipient, my life was saved by a man who decided to donate his organs after his untimely death.  its a decision that most people never make.  while i encourage everyone to become an organ donor, i really just advocate that everyone sit down and seriously think about it.  if ultimately, a person not to become one, then at least he or she thought about it.if i never received my kidney transplant about 3 years ago, i’m not sure if i would be alive right now.  i was on dialysis three times a week, tethered to a machine by needles and tubes for four hours at a time.  i was living but never had the energy to actually live life.  now after i received the kidney, i attend pharmacy school at the same campus where i received my transplant!becoming an organ donor s truly a selfless gift to those waiting for an organ.  one day, i’ll need another kidney transplant since they last at an average of about 10 years.  but i’m hoping it’ll keep me going for much longer than that.  there was not a day that passed when i was on dialysis that i wished my phone would ring and i would get “the call”.  there are about 100,000 people waiting right now. so, if anyone else is reading this, be sure to think about becoming a donor.  if you decide it is something you’d like to do, click the link above and sign up!cheers, thom

    Thom,

Thanks for sharing this personal information.  Stories like yours just
make it more compelling to just sign the fucking form.  I find it
difficult to believe that some people are greedy enough to not donate
after we can see all of the lives that have been saved as a
result…and how many more could be saved with more donations.

    How are finals going??

    Mike

no problem.  i think the best way to educate people is to share personal stories.  people can hear statistics, hear the news, etc etc but the point doesn’t really get through to people until they encounter a person in the situation.  for example, meeting someone gay and talking to him or her is much more effective then watching a tv character on screen.  finals went pretty well.  i’m sick of school and sad that my spring break is almost over but i’m ready for another round!btw, i love the anti-spam word choices.  thom
