This is the one where it becomes official.

Arizonans call the Department of Motor Vehicles the “Motor Vehicles Department.” Totally fucks with that place in my brain where acronyms are stored. For the past 20 years I’ve been calling the place where you get licensed and car registrations the DMV…and suddenly I have to start calling it the MVD?!?!
Well I went there yesterday, and registered my car and got an Arizona Driver License. You can see my California and my Arizona license off to the left there. I’ve lost a few pounds, huh? The California picture was taken in summer 2006–so not too long ago.
One thing that I really liked about the Arizona DMV…er MVD was that they give you everything right then and there. I paid to register my car, and the woman reached under her desk and gave me a new license plate. I took a photo for my new license, and the woman said, “give me 2 minutes to print it out.” In California you have to wait for everything to be mailed to you. They give you temporary everything…”Give it 6 weeks to arrive in the mail.”
So I think that my new plates and my new license make me an Arizonan. Officially.
What do you think?

@cheapblueguitar you leaving?? Or just singing?

Yeah, I’d say you’re official now.
So, you didn’t ask her to go through all the plates under her desk to find a number combo you liked best?? ;)
I still call it the DMV. I also call that sex crimes Law & Order show “SUV” instead of “SVU.”
Don’t you love the fact that your license does not expire for 40 years? I mean because it is not like anyone changes between their mid-20’s and 65 or anything.
But I love the efficiency of the Arizona system. Now that you have license and a registered car, you can renew online, you don’t even have to go back for at least 2 years. If you move, you just go online, enter the new address, pay the $4 and they send you a new drivers license. It is great! Welcome to Arizona. :-)
Heh, it’s called the DMV here too. I imagine the acronyms in my head would be just as screwed up as yours if I had to start calling it the MVD. XD
You forgot to mention one thing that is neat about the Arizona licenses - the long time it’s issued before it’s expired. *sigh* The first year I helped prepare a tax return at a tax office here in NM someone had an Arizona license. Since at the time I had to renew mine in less than a year I was insanely jealous.
Holee, you get licenses that don’t expire for 40 years? Maybe I need to move. We get everything in a one stop shop here at our DMV but be prepared to sit and wait for extensive excruiating hours. I redo my license online now to avoid going down there and take my car tags/taxes renewal to the local office because they are never busy and get my stickers right then and there. No waiting for anything.
